Declare Your Independence!

As Americans enjoy the long Independence Day weekend, I wanted to talk about the powerful symbolism of the 4th of July. Although the holiday in the United States has devolved over the years into a celebration of hamburgers, fireworks, and 1-day car sale spectaculars, let us take a moment to consider the true significance of the events which unfolded 241 years ago. The lessons still apply today for every person on the planet, regardless of your country of origin.
American Independence was ultimately about setting a boundary.
Tired of poor treatment from a larger power and frustrated after years of feeling like their voices weren't being heard, 56 incredible men came together in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and said "no more."
They rejected Britain's opinion of what they should accept and remembered the truth--- they were born with inalienable rights gifted to them by their creator. They believed every human had a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
In order to create a better life, they chose to separate from a toxic relationship and create a more perfect union which provided them safety and happiness.
There was no guarantee this plan would work out. The American militia was not as advanced as their British counterparts. The Army could have been destroyed. It was possible each signee of the Declaration of Independence could be hanged for treason. Their act of defiance ultimately meant facing death.
The founding fathers were uncertain about the outcome. Yet, they signed the Declaration anyway.
This is how freedom was born.
The same opportunity exists for you right now.
What if today was the day you recognized your value and severed ties with the people or thought patterns which try to convince you otherwise? What new possibilities could be born if you had the courage to stand up and declare your needs? What if you stopped waiting for others to give you permission to live your purpose? What new choices would you make?
Would you continue to overgive at a job you aren't happy in?
Would you continue to live solely for the approval of others?
Would you stay in a toxic relationship where you don't feel cherished and respected?
Would you let go of your addictions?
Would you stop comparing yourself to everyone else?
Would you stop putting everyone else's needs above your own?
Would you make more time to enjoy the people and the activities which bring you the most joy?
Would you find a deeper sense of self-compassion and love yourself just as you are?
Today is a beautiful day to take inventory of your life and decide what needs to be abolished for you to create more happiness. Perhaps it's a job, a relationship, a behavior, or your own limiting beliefs which have kept you playing small.
When we reject the things which don't contribute to our well-being, we create space for more love, creativity, passion, and fulfillment to come into our life. From that place of abundance, freedom can be ours.
Just like our founding fathers, all that is required on your part is a vision and a courageous decision to rise up, raise your standards, and demand more from life. The best time to do this was 6 months ago, so we're going to have to settle for today instead!
