From Stay-at-Home Mom to a National TV Audition... in 11 Weeks!

Does your dream feel so out of reach you are afraid to tell other people about it?
During our first coaching session, I asked Kelly what she wanted to create in her life. She danced around the question for 20 minutes with superficial answers ranging from a new car to a new haircut, but those aren't the real answers that will help people get unstuck in life. And they certainly aren't the ultimate outcomes people want when they invest in a coach.
After I pushed her to go deeper, she said "Ok. I don't talk about this with people. Promise you won't judge me."
She wanted to become a TV host for the QVC network.
As a coach, it's not my job to tell clients whether their dreams are realistic or not. I believe when we feel pulled to strive for any goal, it is because the Universe has already gifted us with the resourcefulness and creativity to make it happen.
However, this particular goal presented unique challenges. My client had zero television experience. She had no contacts in the TV industry. She didn't have an audition reel to send to the network. As a stay-at- home mom for the last 8 years, the most recent job on her resume was teaching group fitness classes twice a week at the local gym.
While all of these challenges were real obstacles, there was an even bigger issue which needed to be addressed first.
The fear of getting started.
By "getting started," I mean just admitting out loud that she had a dream to be on TV. Aside from her husband, I was the only person she had talked to about wanting to be on QVC. She was afraid everyone else would judge her, think the dream was stupid, or call her selfish for wanting it.
And if you have an outdated, cobweb belief that chasing your dream will cause you ridicule and embarrassment, you will find a way to not chase your dream.
Before we could take action, we had to do the inner work to identify the stories which kept this client from owning her vision. If she couldn't even speak out loud about what she wanted, how was she ever going to be able to take the action to reach the goal?
There is tremendous wisdom in the verse from the book of Genesis. "And God said let there be light: and there was light."
Our words have tremendous power. When we have the courage to speak up for what we want, we have the ability to instantly open doors which were previously closed.
For Kelly, she noticed the hiring page on QVC was finally accepting applications for new on-air hosts for the first time in years.
This was awesome news, but there was still another challenge.... How do you apply for a TV position at a major network with no prior on-camera experience? We broke down the "to-do" list into manageable tasks, and agreed on another key concept which is essential to making progress towards any dream.
We must be willing to take imperfect action.
If you are waiting for the circumstances to be "perfect" before you get started, you will never get started. She needed to get headshots made, but rather than wait until she saved the money to pay for the $300 luxury salon haircut and the expensive Nordstrom photo shoot clothes, she took perfectly imperfect action.
She got a $14 haircut from Supercuts and bought something cute from the sale rack at Target.
She didn't have a TV audition reel or access to a studio to record a demo. Instead, she sent an Mp3 audio recording of her talking about products she liked.
She got everything together and clicked the submission link on the website...
Then found out she had missed the deadline to submit her materials.
Her heart sank. Did she wait too long and let her dream pass her by? Was she stupid for even wanting to pursue this in the first place? Most people would have used this as an excuse to give up and say things "never work out" for them.
Yet, a little voice in her head told her she should send her materials to the casting director's email anyway. Within seconds of pressing send, the automatic reply message came back saying the deadline had been extended to February 1st.
Truth: It's not your place to worry about HOW to get something done. When you show up for yourself and your purpose, the Universe shows up for you and handles the details.
In this case, time literally expanded to account for her dream. Within two days, the casting agent called her back. Despite having what I'm sure was the least "professional" audition package of the applicants, he was intrigued by her story and her energy.
Her asked to record a video of her selling products on camera. She made a youtube video and sent it in. This lead to a follow up skype audition with the casting director the next day.
Then, a mere 11 weeks after we began working together, the stay-at-home mom with big dreams and no experience was asked to drive to New York City and audition in front of all of the QVC executives. She crushed it! She was personable, she was real, she made the room laugh. She left feeling on top of the world.
The casting decision will not happen until early March, so as of this morning she's still playing the waiting game.
But on some level, the outcome is irrelevant... because we don't set goals to actually achieve the goal. We set goals so we can cultivate an emotion within ourselves.
For Kelly, what she really wanted was to feel the deep sense of joy which comes from doing things that ignite her soul. She had spent years taking care of a husband and kids, but she felt it was time to value herself and do something important to her.
In simply finding the courage to speak up for what she wanted, taking massive action towards a goal, and creating entirely new possibilities for her life in 11 weeks, she was already feeling the joy which had been missing for years.
Happiness doesn't come from perfection. It comes through progress.
For Kelly, her sense of self-love and respect won't ever come from seeing her face on television. It will come from growing into the kind of courageous person it takes to go from a bored mom to a TV host.
So what is the goal you have been putting off? Have you been waiting for the timing to be "perfect?" What emotion do you want create by achieving it?
When you allow yourself to face your fear and take imperfect action, you will find you can create these positive new emotions in the present, instead of pushing them off into the future.
