What I Hate About "Giving Tuesday"

I Know. Worst. Blog. Title. EVER!

Don't get me wrong. I love seeing all of the social media posts from friends who are helping a variety of charitable organizations today. 


But for many, "Giving Tuesday" will be the only day they contribute this year. What happens tomorrow?


November is a month where many of us stop, give thanks for the blessings we have, and look for a way to "pay it forward."


Then by December 1st, we immediately shift the focus back to ourselves. What will we get for Christmas? What can we get in the New Year? More money! A new car in the Happy Honda Days sales event!  A new relationship!


WHAT CAN I GET FROM THE WORLD? GIMME! GIMME! GIMME!


As your coach and mentor, my biggest wish is for you to get everything you want in life.  I want you to enjoy higher levels of success and fulfillment than you ever thought possible.


But I also want to share what I had to learn the hard way. Success and fulfillment do not always go hand in hand. 


Look at Kanye West, a brilliant artist who has sold millions of records, sold out concerts around the world, has legions of fans, and has achieved every single thing musicians set out to do.


And he's currently sitting in a psychiatric ward.


He's successful by every benchmark imaginable. Yet, none of it has brought him lasting peace and fulfillment.


Here's the subtle difference between these two concepts.


Success is about acquiring things outside of ourselves. Am I advancing in my career? Am I making more money than I did last year? Do I have the freedom to travel or do nice things for myself? Can I get the bigger house?


If you are reading this email, it's likely you are on the personal growth path and an extremely high achiever. You are doing the things we are taught from an early age will bring us success.


And it's also possible that in spite of all of that, you still feel empty, unfulfilled, and suffer from chronic discontent.  How do I know? I used to be that guy.


Here's the secret I wish I knew 15 years ago. The ultimate fulfillment comes from what we are GIVING to the world. How are you contributing? How will you leave Earth a better place than you found it? Are you using your unique gifts to contribute in only the way you can?


This doesn't always have to be a financial gift. If we gave money to every person who needed it, we'd go broke. However, I've had clients who experienced a massive energetic shift by consciously smiling at each person they pass on the street or simply giving a compliment to a stranger.


Giving your presence and energy to people costs nothing... and that energy is always returned to you.


So my hope for all of us is that we take the spirit of "Giving Tuesday" and carry it with us each day.
